You need a new thermostat/radiator cap.
A bad thermostat will cause it to overheat and lose coolant.
A bad radiator cap will cause it to lose coolant (has the coolant reservoir been over flowing?).
An over heated temperature sensor for the fan will cause the fan to act radical.
A major or minor over heating can ruin the thermostat, radiator cap, and temperature sensors.
Over heating could have been caused by an air bubble at the thermostat, or debris getting stuck in the thermostat. Modern cooling systems require you to bleed the air from the system when you replace the coolant, which varies according to make and model. General Motors vehicles do have an air bleeder valve.
A major over heating could have ruined a head gasket, causing loss of coolant (lets hope not).
A bad water pump will cause loss of coolant, resulting in over heating. The water pump has a weep hole that leeks coolant when it's bad. The water pump makes a particular sound when it's bad.
Change the thermostat/radiator cap.
Flush the cooling system, including the heater coil (turn on the heater while flushing).
Fill with new coolant.
Bleed air from system.
Good Luck!

i own a repair shop, and it does not make a difference in the color of the coolant in them i have changed a lot of them from red to green ,what may have happened to yours is the thermostat might have stuck on it,and made it get hot,as for the fan, id check the fuse for it,it might have just blown, and can be replaced on it,if not the relay switch may have went out on it,one thing for sure though you cant drive it until you get it straitened out,or it will damage the engine in it ,if it runs hot,but don't worry about the color of the coolant if you changed all of it it will be fine ,and even if you just added to it ,it will be fine,id check the thermostat it might be a faulty one ,good luck i hope this help,s.

Just to let you know, dodgeman is a well known idiot around here. Mixing incompatible antifreeze will fill your system up with brown goop. If you were real low you might have had a lot of air you needed to bleed out. The fan going out wouldn't be caused by a hot engine.

With GM Vehicles you have to make sure you got the right type of coolant. You are not sup post to use the green antifreeze. You need to get the red stuff. You might want to call a parts store, but I'm pretty sure GM vehicles have to have the red coolant.

Your fan may be a fuse. temp spike may be a stuck termostat, collasped hose or faulty water pump. Sound like the water is not being circulated through the engine.
