How do you avoid perverts and freaks on the internet?

I'd like to do this while not avoiding the nice people. Is there a way to filter or is it safer to just avoid the internet all together?

for one dont go into chat rooms, there full of pervs..

of course there are still some who are very nice, i met my husband in a chat room almost 8 years ago

By not asking questions on a public forum. Something tells me you don't really want to avoid them.

The Internet is full of predators, you need to be careful who you choose to talk to. Just block people who annoy you and ignore them if they ask you something you feel uncomfortable with.
