Technically they are the same thing. Let me explain an MP3 is a format of music. On a cd they have a format of music called wave, and somone figured out a way to compress it so its smaller and has similar quality and they called it MP3. An Ipod is really only a very popular Mp3 player. Just like kleenex is a very popular tissue but they are called kleenex or a band aid is called an adhesive strip but we call it a band aid. Its just branding. however there have been lots of spinoffs of mp3 such as:aac(sony),wma(microsoft),m4a(apple ipod) but all of them still play mp3's so its no big deal. An ipod is a great mp3 player for some and they constantly get better however I personally think it is a hype or a trend. I personally like the creative zen(creative labs) , or the Zune(microsoft) as an alternative to the video ipod and the samsung z4(samsung) or the sansa(sandisk) as an alternative to the ipod nano. Those alternatives may not be as poular at the school yard but they offer more features for the money.

Ok, personaly i like MP3 players WAY better, because iPods are the number one "breaking down" devices you can get, they have the most reported breakings and stuff like that. MP3 players are cheaper also and do not break as easily, they do not hold as much music but come on who has 30GB of music on their PC? Not very many people, you don't even have that much space. Also iPods DO NOT have FM tuners like what you WOULD find in a MP3 player. They are both MP3 players but other music players other than iPods seem to last longer, work better, have better sound, and are way cheaper. Besides a few MP3 players even let you expand their memory. MP3 players are also found to be really small, instead of those huge wallet size things. It's your money, but i would suggest one of these MP3 players either a Zune from Micrsoft, a SanDisk, a Memorex, or other kind, but not iPods, trust me save the oney, the zune lets you do all an video iPod can do but WAY cheaper, at least by like 100 dollars, also the Zune is capable of an FM tuner which lets you listen to the radio plus all the other features, and it even lets you have up to 30GB of music on it. Zune comes out on November 14, 2006. Hope that helped! Also if you go and look at the questiosn about MP3 players, the number one asked questions are form people with iPods having trouble with them and lots of issues, you don't need an iPod to like music nor do u need an MP3 player, but it enhances your entertainment, so go with the MP3 player, trust me on this one, you will look back when you get it and be so grateful that lyou listened to me and the BestBuy guy.

I have an Ipod Nano and love it. I can listen to the songs in almost any order I want and I can make play lists or just listen to a single artist or album. Lots of versatility and it's small. i like that.
