I even put a rock in there for him to bask on, but he just keeps staying in the water (my turtle).

I would say it is Very Important to keep your turtle wet

It would be normal if your turtle didn't have a basking spot. Even if you put a rock for him to bask on, if there's no heat source warming the rock up, he won't be motivated to climb out of the water (they bask so they can absorb heat, not just because they feel like it).

I once had to go without a heat lamp for a while and even though my turtle had a basking spot, he wouldn't use it, because it wasn't warm. After a few weeks I got him another heat lamp and only a few minutes after installing it, he climbed on the dock to bask. You've got to give them heat.

If there IS a heat source, then your turtle may be sick. Sick turtles may either stay in the water all the time or on land all the time because they are too weak to swim. If he is eating normally and is otherwise healthy, consider the first part of what I said. Good luck!

Turtles can and will stay underwater for extended periods of time. A funny and interesting fact about turtles is that they are able to breath through their butts. Turtles can remain underwater for periods of several hours to several days at a time. During winter hibernation they may be submerged for many months. A lot of turltes are able to take in oxygen from the water through linings in the mouth, throat, and internal chamber called the cloaca, as well as through the skin. The more active the turtle is more often it will have to surface to take a breath. Turtles are extreamly cold blooded and it may be warmer to stay underwater than to bask on the rock.

RES usually bask a nice chunk of the day. If yours is not, I'd check:

- Basking sites should be heated to about 90
- Basking sites should be lit with good lighting including UV
- Water temps should be 75-80
- Pond size should be about 10 gallons per inch of turtle- small ponds stress turtles.
