Its a.) marker proteins. They let the other surrounding cells know what that cell is and that it is not a forign body which should be destroyed. Lets all be thankful for the marker proteins protecting our cells from being attacked by our own immune system.

I'm going to say marker proteins, because superficial proteins sounds like a trick answer, and channels and receptors aren't on the cell for identification, but for getting stuff into the cell and communication, respectively.

My educated guess would be the receptor protein, as of my knowledge there are no such proteins of the other answers. The true recognition proteins on cell membranes however are glycoproteins, if that happens to come up for you.
