There is no past tense for shut. Just say it is shut down or it has been shut down

The past tense for "shut up" is "shut up." It's the same thing.

Geek answer:

Shut up is actually slang and not proper English. So "shut up" is used both present and past tense.

Proper English present tense is "be quiet". Past tense would be "silenced."

"Shut" in "shut up" is in the imperative form. There is no past tense for the imperative form. If you're using it in the indicative form, then it already is in the past tense. ("Mr. Green Jeans was shut up in his office for days.")

VERY NICE! (Sorry to shout.) I thought I was the only one who used the past tense of shut. But when I use it, it's the past tense for... Well, try this. He/she was constipated, so they were "shat" up. Which of course means they could not have "shat" their pants if they tried.

Love that word in an e-mail for the past tense of... Well, you know. Hope to see it in Webster's one day, but not with my picture next to it. Thanks for the chuckle. Ciao!
