You can burn your music onto CDs in iTunes, use iDvd for burning home movies, in Finder you can backup files by burning onto CDs or DVDs and create a backup bootable DVD of your install disk with Disk Utility, among other things. There are many freeware and shareware burn programs for Mac OS X.

If you have a mac that has a DVD burner then theres really no reason to ask. Its a mac so all you really have to do is tell it burn a DVD. Use I-movie or look around in the applications list, if its at least OS9 it'll have the capacities to burn a DVD. If its older then that or for some reason you have an ibook that came with just a cd burner, then you can't burn DVDs no matter what program you use.

Yes, if you are using Mac OS X you can use "Disk utility" located in your "utilities" folder.
