Ziggurats were artificial "mountains" made of baked mud bricks in ancient Mesopotamia (Babylon for example). They were religious structures with a temple on top. they were built like stepped pyramids. One of the oldest is at a site called Ur in modern day Iraq. It is dated to around 3500 BC. Only priests or royalty could go into the temple because they were sacred places for the worship of the main gods (like Marduk).
