Why do people hate someone for the color of their skin, or their religous beliefs, or any other number of reasons. My best guess is....the ones out there who choose to "hate" without a true reason, (not that a reason is liscence to hate) are the ones who also choose not to look deeply at their own life, soul, spirit. I think that it's easier to judge and hate someone else, than it is to judge and correct ourselves.
As for why "cops"...
I was raised in a law enforcement home. My dad was Chief of Police, and in other law enforcement my whole life. In fact..his name is on the Law officers memorial in D.C. for officers killed in the line of duty. Your question really touched my heart. I think daddy was the last "Matt Dillon" !! Personally, I thank you for your service and dedication to the public. You tend to see the worst in our society, you risk your life for little or no appreciation, work horrible hours sometimes, in not only potentially life threatening conditions but also uncomfortable conditions, like rain, snow, high heat etc. And yet you get up and do it all over again the next day. You also must realize that there are some cops who do the job because of the need to control others, a power trip or their own egos. There is actually very little accountablity for officers, or any public figure, who decide to take advantage of their position of trust, and to abuse the power we give them. So some of the "hate" out there comes from a persons contact with the "bad cops", and the expectation that the bad one is the rule not the exception.
One more thought on this.... I have four year old twins, they are great kids, but do naughty things sometimes and they hate to get caught and equally hate the resulting punishment. I think maybe the ones who you think "hate" cops, really just hate the results of being caught in a crime, and cops are the first and probably most memorable encounter they will have upon being caught ...with their choice to commit a crime. A case of "shooting the messenger" Im afraid, in some cases.
Please be assured, that not everyone hates you. It is, I'm afraid, the nature of the beast. Like being a mom!

Be Safe!!

For me, it started when I was a teen sitting in my car eating ice cream with my girlfriend and being surrounded by cops with their hands on their holsters. They were quite gruff and interrogated each of us separately because some idiot pushed his girlfriend into a silver car a few miles down the road. So, naturally, they would be sitting outside a 31 Flavors, right? Then, there was the time I was pulled over and accused of stealing my own car. When the plates checked out, the cop starting asking me where I got my CD player, what was in my backpack...anything so he could find something to nail me on.

As an adult, it's things like the "Overkill" report which I've listed here as a source. Almost every day I hear the story of another police raid where SWAT teams break into people's homes, rough them up (sometimes to the point of hospitalization) or KILL THEM, shoot their pets, and then don't find any drugs or child porn or whatever they're after because THEY HAVE THE WRONG ADDRESS. And you know what's funny? When the Chief of Police makes a statement following such a raid, they almost never say "we're sorry".

Oh, and then there are things like asset forfeiture laws, which allow the cops to confiscate my computer, my car, or my cash by accusing me of a crime. Oh, but I get it back if I'm proven innocent, right? WRONG. I have to sue to get it back, and there have been cases where judges have ruled against the innocent party and allowed the cops to keep their possessions.

Cops are a gang -- bullies with guns. Actually, they're worse than street thugs because they have more than just guns, but the force of law and the courts behind them. There's nothing you can do against a cop.

Only guilty people or people with a guilty conscience
"hate" cops. Yet who do they call first when they have been wronged or are in need? The cops!

Don't take it personally. You see people who are trying to avoid you daily. You don't get to see the majority of people - like me - that appreciate you and your service. We know who to call when the "bad guys enter our space".

Most Cops are the best people in the world. BUT there are a few bad eggs that get the rest of you lumped into a bad group.

I know lots of cops - all good people. Thanks for all you do to keep us safe!

I respect officers very much. There are some who abuse their power, and they give cops a bad rep. I've had very good experiences(in areas of protection) and very bad ones that I was presumed guilty until I proved I was innocent. I'd love to elaborate on one particular incident. Anyway, the citizens that appreciate you the most are probably not as vocal as the ones who don't. Thank you for what you do, and keep it up!!!

To be honest, I use to when I was breaking the law, like not wearing my seat belt..now I've grown up and appreciate police officers..although I do think there are those who abuse the job, but that is the way with all jobs. I think the people that hate you are probably doing something they shouldn't and maybe never had to be saved from someone that has a gun to their head or a rapist, etc.
Thank you, I don't have the courage to do what you do.

I don't hate cops. I find them irrelevant. I called 911 to report that a big black man was in my front yard cussing at and threatening my dad. They said they'd send a police car right away. They didn't send one. Two hours later, someone from the police department called and asked how it went. The perp's license plate number is (California) 4PZR302, a green car.

Another time, one night at 2AM, my neighbor's alarm went off. I called the non-emergency police number. They said they'd send a car. They sent one 45 minutes later -- it cruised on past at 20mph without stopping, although I was out there waving for them! ...and that d---ed alarm kept me awake all night.

It is a sad state of affairs when the populous hates police. I admire anyone that will spend his working career to protect my interests. Only a fool would hate a police officer just for being a police officer.

Everybody doesn't hate cops. Most people admire them; including me. I appreciate the job you do and I wouldn't want to do it. Thanks for being there to serve and protect.
On the other hand, like in any profession, there are those who abuse power, revel in their authority and behave like criminals. It is those cops I and nobody else likes.
