It won't stop it at all. The ONLY thing an IUD does is to make your uterus incapable of staying pregnant. It doesn't stop you from getting pregnant, it only makes you abort your baby when you do. And... there have been cases where babies have still been born to women with IUD's. Doctors aren't exactly truthful when they tell you about these things.
In answer to a subsequent question: No, of course every month you're not aborting... That's ludicrous. Do people get pregnant every month that they're TRYING to get pregnant? It takes a lot of things to happen in order to get pregnant. What I said was: The IUD doesn't stop you from getting pregnant, it just aborts the baby WHEN YOU DO. And do you find it odd, that they say they don't really know why the IUD works? Science has grown by leaps and bounds when it comes to the human body... They can grow ears on the backs of mice! They can operate on the human brain and know exactly what they're doing... But you can believe they don't know why women don't stay pregnant when something is inserted in their uterus?
Of course there is argument as to how or why the IUD works. Of course doctors tell you that they don't cause abortion. Why would women allow someone to put something inside them knowing full well that they're possibly killing their own offspring? If you research IUD's online, almost every site you find will state that one of the ways and IUD works is by preventing a fertilized egg (a baby) to attatch to the uterus. Thereby, the body expells the fertilized egg and does not stay pregnant. So call it what you will, but in my HUMBLE opinion, when a baby is concieved, you are pregnant from that moment on until the pregnancy ends... however that may be.

Depends on which one you have Mirena YES 20% of women on Mirena don't get a period at all. ( I haven't had one in 3yrs)
Para Guard its less likely but does happen I have a close friend on Para guard and she goes 2-3 months without a period.
The REAL way the IUD's wrk is unknown as for the previous poster if every month I'm aborting I would have to have a period or am I walking around with a 3y.o fetus??

Not at all. It's my understanding that it can make your period heavier, in fact.
