i own a repair shop, and you can take the plug loose on the harness back at the tank ,and ground it ,and if the hand moves it has a bad sending unit on it,but you have to ,make sure you have the right wire one of them if for the fuel pump, don't ground it ,,or it will blow a fuse ,,take a 12 volt test light and check it before you ground it ,also before you start this procedure ,make sure the fuse isn't blow ed for it,sometimes they,ll blow a fuse,,,if you don't feel comfortable doing this test ,have it done by a repair shop, they can tell in a few minutes if the sending unit is bad on it,,good luck i hope this help,s.

Fill it up, then drive until it runs out of gas. Look at the miles you have gone. Pour the 5 gallons of fuel in the can you've been carrying in the tank. Now drive to the station and fill it up. Watch your mileage, and when you are within 15 or so miles of the mileage when you ran out last time, stop and fill it up. Or fix the gage.

I have a 1994 jeep cherokee and the gas gadge is pretty unreliable. I use my trip odometer to calculate how much range I have left. I know a half a tank will get me about 150-180 miles. It's not perfect but it's a temporary solution

1) don't buy Ford 2) fix the gauge or 3) keep a gas can and fill up often so you don't run out.

remove the sending unit wire from the tank and touch it to ground, if the gauge moves then the gauge and wiring is good, replace the sending unit in the tank. make sure it is the sending unit wire and not a fuel pump wire.
