The Wii will have a media player. It will be able to play Movies and Music, but it will read them from the SD cardslot, and NOT from the disc drive. Because of the licensing fees, Wii will not have a DVD player capability. The reasons why it would not play CDs escape me, but Nintendo has not specifically stated that it will, so you can safely assume it will not.
Of course the only way to be sure about CDs is to wait for the launch.

I am not sure about playing CDs but I do not think it will be able to. However, the Wii has a slot for an SD memory card. This card can be used for various things, and it has been stated that you can make a picture slideshow and add your own music to it. So I think that at the very least you could fill an SD card with MP3s and play the music from that. However, none of that is confirmed, just my guess.
