marshall i TOTALLY agree with you! that is the same reaon why i love windows! but vista i the new version of windows! it is to XP what XP was to 98.

everyone else... yeah yeah, linux... but get real... about .005% of the population uses linux. what about majority of the population who uses windows?

Keiron... good answer and i think you are mostly right. ...but I think there are still a lot of people out there who are looking forward to it.

thanks jason, you made me feel smart

young dont be stupid. if any desktop version of linux had hald as many people trying to use and absue it it would crash and burn just like windows. ...the only thing keeping it safe is that its under the radar and the people who know how to use it know more about their computers than your average windows user.

every product on earth is made for windows. you can operate windows at a nearly subconcious level. ...almost every business in america runs windows and microsoft software (which runs better with windows).

if linux were a superiour product windows wouldnt dominate the market like it does.

Mike and JAriel, yes the required hardware does suck doesnt it!? Ive got a 2 year old laptop that is still pretty nice but only a 64mb graphics card and so i cant run the full version.

wouldnt switching to linux require a great deal more training than just upgrading to a jazzier new windows?

PCGuru, thanks for the report. I heard that and upgrade from XP to Vista will be around $100.... not too bad!

I wouldnt want to be running a computer with less than 512mb ram anyway. ive got 1.5gb on my laptop and i bought it 2 years ago!

anyway dont forget the voice recognition features and the new gui! I hope it will catch one! if it is as neat as i hear it is then people will see it and want it.

pichim, i agree with you about older programs being better often times! definatly, definatly agree with you. i would use notepad over word ANY day! there are sooooooooooooooo many useless features in new programs. I understand what you are saying about waiting for the bugs to be worked out but maybe your mind will change when microsoft starts running ads for it?

ok, i have been using computers with windows since 3.1, and every operating system has had so many bugs right off the hop ... i know they are working with vista so it doesn't, but so far their track record speaks louder than the hype.

Also, I am very content with XP. I have loved it from day one and at this point in my computer usage life, I just want to stay with something that is proven and I like. In the past, I have always been one of the first to try new software, new versions, new O/S, but lately, what I am experiencing and seeing in the "new" stuff is that it is bloated, has features that aren't really needed, and in many cases, is dumbed down to the least common denominator of user. (speaking specifically here of paintshop pro 10 and 11, but there are others as well). For the first time ever, I find myself preferring older versions of programs, because all too often they are better than their successors.

In fact, I am so against getting Vista that I am purchasing a new computer this year, rather than waiting as planned, so that I DON'T get Vista!

Vista will crash and burn. The new thing will soon be Linux - a tough and cool OS which is untouchable by virus and malware.

Try Linux Mandriva Free 2007 - the desktop will amaze you. Windows has just one desktop. Linux has 16 desktops if you choose - er, yes, I did say sixteen! Plus a brilliant retractable task bar called the Panel, which can do an animated slide off to the right or left of the screen to maximise your work area.

Plus Linux is either FREE or VERY CHEAP ($10-$20), there is no crazy licensing, product activation or "Windows Genuine Advantage" , and it ships with a truckload of free programs for almost every task - FAR more than any version of Windows.

Try Linux - you WILL be amazed.

The way Microsoft's upgrades go, it will be something like this: either it's an incremental upgrade (see 95-98-XP) or it's completely horrible and no one touches it(ME). Given the costs associated with upgrading from XP to Vista, it's unlikely that people will rush out and buy Vista.

The fact is that this isn't really a huge change to our lives. XP-Vista won't be 3.1-95 by any stretch of the imagination, and right now people are mostly content with XP. That, and most people will never really notice the new features in Vista.

Well i have the beta version of vista. And vista is totally different for one it's more secure then XP the coding used for vista is totally different from vista. Two the features that vista comes with incredible so easy to use it takes advantage of the new processors that are coming out in the market you'll be able to create dvd's cd's movies on vista in seconds i can actually say it has so many features it's almost bad. and pricing vista is going to come in different versions first they started with 7 different versions i don't think its going to be 7 but we'll that part i actually am not sure of. It is true that you need at the least 512mb ram but suggested is 1gb ram. But the price difference these days between those is not much.

I've got the latest beta version, I have also get the latest beta version of Microsoft office, and quite frankly they are both bloated.

To make vista perform in Aero mode a decent graphics card is required and lots of memory.

I do work for businesses and at present, none are willing to change their systems, it means upgrading all the systems and re-training of the staff, and that is very expensive. Some medium size companies are looking at Linux and Open Office.

I reckon if a major business can make the change, others will quickly follow.

In my view, it seems more like eye-candy. Sure, MS touts better security (among other features) - but how many times have we heard that previously? Win95, 98, ME, XP -- ring a bell?

The new pricing structure (Basic, Home, Ultimate etc) can be a bit confusing -- especially for new computer users. Can't we just get one flavor of the OS? If it contains features we don't need, fine -- we leave them off. But then, I'm not a Microsoft marketing shark.

And now, Vista requires certain hardware specifications so you can enjoy the rich new features (Aero comes to mind) ? No thanks. I want an OS to conform to MY needs, not vice versa.

Not everyone uses windows. A growing percentage uses linux, and apache servers dominate the market. The 512mb threshold to run vista is a joke, and it is hardly better than XP. Not to mention the price.

It like cars there is Ford and Mercedes
I would take mercedes but i got the for which does the same thing so i dont want to upgrade at this moment

Vista was said to be a really really good operating system and then it just started taking too long to create and the hype kept dying. Another reason is because people are dumb when it comes to computers and operating systems which means that only people who know that much about computers care. Everyone else is "just there".

2006-11-04 19:33:45 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

People dont care because it is not that different. People like XP so much that microsoft is just making another XP but on steriods. The only real difference is that they are making it with more media options to compete with apple and its media functions.
