My great grandparents, definitely. They could hardly speak english, but we didn't have any problems communicating. From time to time grandma would tell me to walk the path behind our house to go visit them. My great grandfather would grab my face in both of his hands and smooch my cheeks until they were sore from the snow white stubble growning on his own tanned face. Then I would play on his saw horses, watching him build things until my great grandma came out and offered me a tin of warm, dried apples that she just finished dehydrating. When it was time to leave, I was handed a hershey bar and a whole dollar from grandpa's worn leather wallet. Those were the only times I have ever felt really loved. I miss my great grandparents terribly but as fate would have it I ended up owning the house only five doors from their old house. When I'm doing yard work I often stop and stare at their backyard and remember those times. Thank you for causing me to think of all of this :)

Ah! Memories. Well, I thought for a while and picked one of my best two. I was in grade school, I think about sixth grade. We were having a touch football game for gym that day out in the street behind the school. (You could do that when I was growing up. Not like today.)

Well, I was tall for my age, but skinny. And strange looking. Anyway, the QB went to pass the ball, I saw what was going to happen, and I jumped up, arms over my head. No, I didn't catch it. But I managed to deflect it. All of a sudden I was very popular! I was being called "Bubba" (After a football player of my time, "Bubba" Smith.)

I was quite happy for that day, but unfortunately it did not bring me everlasting fame. I think about it every now and then, and hope that I have something better come along that I can be proud of in my dotage. (I certainly hope that was not the highlight of my life!)

I remember going to my grandparents condo that was located in the complex behind my home, and their condo was closest to me. Whenever there was an ambulance going in there, I would call them to make sure it wasnt them, and we'd go over there to eat twice every week so that they could cook us a great meal. Grandma cooked, grandpa made cookies. We couldnt eat cookies until we finished all of our food, and my brother would trick everyone and hide it in his pockets just for grandpa's sweet cookies. I miss them so much, but I still have cute memories that I will cherish forever. Memories are the greatest things to have from when you were innocent because you can always look back (hopefully fondly) at the days where you didnt have to worry about anything, everyone else worried for you.

I believe I was about 5. My dad was carrying me covered up in a blanket. We were getting into the car to go to the drive-in movies.
