Timex originally started the trend in the 1950's. It has two purposes. First, it is the position your hands are supposed to be in when you drive, and gives a mental image of being in control. Second, 1010 can be either AM or PM, so the ad would look believable photographed or filmed in most places in the world whether filmed in daylight or after dark.

Analog watches are set @ 10:10 to "frame" the manufactures name while keeping symmetry. I prefer 4:20 myself.
