If you want it to recognized by the state than yes you need to apply for a marriage license, after the ceremony it will be signed by 2 witnesses and the person performing the ceremony. At that point you then turn it in at the court house and they issue you a marriage license. You need this license in order change your name on your license and social security card and for taxes. I believe even in handfastings these days the same rules apply.

A marriage license allows you the right to get married, which you do have to have legally, and the marriage certificate verifies you got married legally, signed by whom ever performed the ceremony. But you do have to have a state marriage license in your state in which you are to be married before you can get a certificate. Now just because you have a state issued marriage license doesnt mean that you have to get married. Theyre usually issued for 30 days

Uh-huh, well, YES you need a license and a blood test in most states! What's the difference between what? You need a license and you will then get a certificate (or copy of the license) and yes, someone has to officiate. This is really a no-brainer.

The license is what you get before you get married, SO that you can get married (some states also require a blood test)... the license is to prove you aren't already married to someone else. Then AFTER you get married, you get a marriage certificate, which proves that you got married.

A "spouse-to-be" would be another important ingredient, lol.

You get the license first, get married before an official, the license is signed by various people and you return the license to the courthouse. A certificate, suitable for framing, is then mailed to you. Keep it among your important documents as it will be needed related to name changes, insurance, etc.

God bless your union!

If you are considered common law then no you don't need a certificate. The time you will have had to live with the other person is different in each states and some states don't recognize common law marriages.

the license just says that you've filed for marriage and you bring that document to the courthouse or church or wherever you are getting married. The certificate is the recorded document that says you are legally married so you can file your taxes together, change your name, etc... good luck

You need a license to prove that you are not married now to someone else.

I believe a licence is when you are already married...so you first should get a certificate...then after your married you go pick up your licence at your local court house to show proof that your married. When your ready to change your name this is what everyone will need to see...
