The Pleco will eat algae discs more often at night. It depends on your fish size and number. It's very easy to find out with a little "testing" depending on the above ie. For each fish in the tank up to three inches in length i give mine one disc each in the in the "PM". The next morning check the tank for uneaten discs. If you find any you can cut back on the algae, or if all discs are gone try feeding them a little more. It will become easy quickly to know how much to feed them, especially as they grow in size. It will be common knowledge in a short while, as these fish grow. one draw back i have had is lots of "fecal" matter excreted especially when they get big. Therefore more often cleaning will have to be done. They are good at cleaning the tank of natural algae. But when the tank algae runs out the pleco will need more suplemental discs. I have observed these fish munching on raw round slices of zucchini easily found in the produce section of most grocery stores. These fish have survived for many years so they can be tough to die. But treat them with care as you do with your other dwellers in your tank.

They will eat algae in the tank or the algae wafers you can buy. They will also eat boiled squash, cucumber, oranges, watermelon, plant leaves, shrimp pellets and dead fish. I've even had mine come to the top and eat floating pellets some times. These are all things I have fed mine, and my Koi with good results. Try them out and see what he likes.

I always feed mine algae wafers. They come in different sizes, varied for the size of your funny friend. They are my favorite tank dweller. P. are bottom feeders and are often purchases to eat algae from the sides of the tank. Often, especially in clean tanks, they need the wafers to stay healthy. I always shop at a good local fish store, not a chain. I ask the employees how many wafers to feed at a time. The wafers sink the bottom, and the P.s learn to identify them quickly. My current favorite P. is a green one we call "Goblin". We have four in a 90 gallon tank.
