There are many natural treatments for insomnia that should be considered before resorting to medications.
Tryptophan, melatonin, 5-HTP, Valerian, and St. John’s Wort may help with sleep. In difficult cases, use of these in combination have been successful.
Valerian is sometimes used as a treatment for anxiety. However, it is more commonly recommended as an aid for occasional insomnia.
Kava is probably better for anxiety but is sometimes recommended at higher doses to treat insomnia as well.
Make sure that something you are currently taking is not causing the problem. Substances such as panax ginseng, hydrocortisone taken late in the day, caffeine, and too much alcohol, cocaine or sedatives can cause insomnia.
Other suggestions
Poor sleepers do not clear caffeine from their systems as rapidly as normal sleepers. Even one cup of coffee at breakfast only was enough to keep them awake at night. A two week trial of no caffeine may be beneficial.
Sleep in complete darkness. A recent study indicated that even dim artificial light may disrupt sleep and melatonin production.
Don't nap. Sleep disturbances may encourage napping during the day, which can make it harder to fall asleep at a normal hour. Avoiding naps can promote sleep at an earlier hour.
Try taking your watch off and any clocks out of the room. This simple technique has worked for a surprising number of people.
Reading for 45-60 minutes.
Aerobic exercise 3-5 times per week.
Many with FMS need a water bed, sometimes even with an egg-crate pad. Some need a hard bed. Find out what works for you. Go to a store and try some.
If hypoglycemia is a problem, some are helped by a snack before going to bed.
Go to bed only when you are sleepy but get up at the same time each morning.
If medication is necessary, find out which works for you. Don’t give up - good sleep is worth the search.
Vitamin B12 can help with fatigue, insomnia, depression, and the anxiety of getting older, especially if low stomach acid is suspected. Shots may be required for large doses.
Mild acting agents like homeopathic preparations, chamomile tea, a long relaxing bath, or a touch of sea salt on the tongue with a glass of water can be tried.

hot bath, valerian, chamomile are ok, as is melatonin
no choc, alcohol or black tea (all stir up nervous system)
Ever had a go at Bach Flower Remedies?
Since you say you can't switch mind off, I'd say try putting 4 drops of White Chestnut from the stock bottle in a large glass of water and sipping it throughout the day. It won't work instantly but you should start finding it easier to wind down after a week or so. Keep preparing and sipping this mixture till your sleeping pattern seems to be reestablished. You can also prepare a treatment bottle. Some chemists will do it for you, so just ask for a treatment bottle of White Chestnut.

I did both of those things. I certainly didn't worry about squashing her, but then I wasn't on drugs or anything like that to impair my natural instincts. After she started moving around some, I stuffed cushions between the bed and the wall so she wouldn't slip into the crack. I got a plastic sheet (the kind that is soft and doesn't make noise) for the bed in case of accidents. It was certainly convenient, and we played in the bed too. I had a little dog that had been sleeping with me for years. She didn't react to the baby at all at first, so I thought she didn't notice. But then when she was walking toward me on the bed one time, she jumped over the baby and didn't step on her, so I knew she realized the baby was there. She started taking more interest in the baby as she started moving more. As for carrying her in a sling, that didn't work out quite as great. Pretty soon she made it clear that she wanted her face away from me so she could see what was going on. She wouldn't sleep in the sling because she was afraid of missing something. I used it sometimes, but I found it inconvenient to get her off and on. I used the buggy in the neighborhood walking some of the time. Some of the time I just carried her. Other mothers carried their babies snuggling in slings, but mine was a thrill-seeker.

I HAVE PROBLEMS SLEEPING AND MELATONIN REALLY DOES WORK. I TAKE ONE OR TWO PILLS AROUND 8:00 AND I AM TIRED BY 9:00 TO 9:30. SOMETIMES IT WORKS FASTER, BUT IT REALLY DOES HELP ME. TRY IT.
YOU CAN GET IT AT ANY DRUG STORE. TRY TO GET THE
3 MG. THE 1 MG DOESN'T DO MUCH UNLESS YOU TAKE ABOUT 4 OF THEM, AND THAT IS JUST A WASTE OF MONEY.
I DON'T LIKE TEA SO THAT IS OF NO HELP TO ME. ALSO TRY READING EVEN A MAGAZINE IF NOT A BOOK. IT RELAXES YOU AND HELPS THE MIND RELAX AS WELL.
GOOD LUCK!!

Additional melatonin often helps when all else fails. It's a naturally occuring hormone and some people need topping up. It's available over the counter apart from UK and New Zealand.

Hot chocolate has caffeine (not the best). Strong chamomile tea, a warm bath. Read THE RELAXATION RESPONSE by Herbert Benson, and do it regularly. Regular exercise too. Limit computer and TV in the evenings. These things will improve your sleep.
