I have a Dyson and I absolutely LOVE it. I only have the Dyson Original and it works great on pet hair. However my sister has the Dyson Animal and she really loves it too! I have 2 pets, and the original works great. When she purchased her Animal, she only had one pet, and she was upset that it got so much hair from the floor. Only because she knew that she had wasted her time with her previous vacuum and it was horrible. It never got any of the hair!!! The Dyson actually picked up all the hair that had been there for quite sometime!
But like I said, I only have the Original and it works great on pet hair. You may want to look into that. Mine came with the Animal Turbo Tool, although the website says it doesn't. It might save you a little bit of money. Also, the Dyson never needs filters to replace.

Consumer Reports did not give the Dyson a very good rating. Go to your public library and go thru back issues and find where they rate vacuums.

Electolux canister is the only way to go. I have two of them one is 20 yrs old and one is 2 years old. Have one in the lower level and one on main level. They have more power then any vacuum I have ever had. My sister has one after purchasing sever vacuums through the years and she agrees they are the best. Expensive but are good for years and years. Had a Eureka and Hover years ago and all I did was replace belts on them.

If you really want a vacuum, get a Kirby. I just bought a Kirby Diamond a few months ago and it is the best money can buy. Vacuums, shampoos and you can even spray paint with it.
It is outrageously expensive , but lasts forever
