All of the above, plus your Dr. is checking to make sure you don't develop eclampsia or one of the other scary things that can happen. It's certainly your right to ask about the blood tests and how often, but it is not being done frivolously.

good luck to you

If you're pregnant, get ready to give some blood. Below is a list of the blood tests you may be in for at your first prenatal visit. (If you fall into a high-risk category for certain genetic disorders, your practitioner should recommend that you be screened for them at this point as well.

Blood type, Rh factor, and antibody screening
Complete blood count
German measles (rubella) immunity
Chicken pox immunity
Hepatitis B testing
Syphilis screening
HIV testing

Glucose Screening

Between 24 and 28 weeks, you'll be given a glucose screening test to check for gestational diabetes, and possibly another blood test to check for anemia. If you're Rh-negative (but your baby's father isn't, or you don't know for sure), an extra tube of blood will be drawn to check for Rh antibodies before you're given an injection of Rh immune globulin at 28 weeks.

It depends on your type of OB care, most hospitals/ clinics will take all 9 vials of blood at once and get it out the way instead of pricking you once a month and what not, Blood tests are taken at the first OB appointment and when you are admitted to deliever.

It depends on your hormone levels.
FIRST: to check your levels
SECOND: to be sure numbers are doubling (2-3 days after the first time)
THIRD: Just to be sure levels a still rising.

If the 2nd or 3rd time the numbers are not going up like they should, they might retest a few times.
