Mine is "In My Life" by The Beatles (yes, it is a breakup song. Lennon wrote it when he thought his marriage was about to end, which it turned out didn't happen for about 3 more years)

Two runners up are "Hows It Going to Be" by Third Eye Blind, and "How to Save a Life" by The Fray.

Also, "The Scientist" by Coldplay, or maybe "Run" by Snow Patrol, even though I think "Run" is more about death than a breakup.

Anyway, what is your favorite, and why?

i love run by snow patrol too. i like to think of it as a breakup song also.

anyway i think my all time favorite breakup song would be cup of coffee by garbage. its really depressing. when my ex broke up with me i listened to this on repeat for a really long time..

my second favorite is a letter to elise by the cure. It's just an amazing song.

Don't think twice, it's all right - Bob Dylan

Susan Tedeschi does a better job on vocals on her rendition tho.

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

Anthrax - N.F.B. (Dallabnikufesin) because it is funny.

We fell in love at first sight
I can't explain the feelings
When I first saw you
We were so happy
A life of love sweet honey child
You'll always be mine
But then I played the fool
I never meant to hurt you
Or sleep with your friends
We reconciled we found ourselves
Our love was meant to be
Oh, baby can't you see
You left me standing in the mud
Crying to myself
A heart so full of pain
But we full in love again
This time forever true love prevails over all
She got hit by a truck

Oh my gosh, Goodbye My Lover, by James Blunt. Get's me in the gut everytime b/c it's so gut wrenching! It speaks about the intimacy of two people... and how close you can be, and what you think about when the person you love so much just has to go...
Oh, and I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt... and You Were Always On My Mind by Willie Nelson... those are good too.

I'm a child of the sixties so my favorite breaking up song is naturally, "Breaking up is Hard to Do", by Neil Sadaka

That's what you get for Lovin' Me by Gordon Lightfoot.

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Everything you had is gone
As you can see
That's what you get for lovin me

I ain't the kind to hang around
With any new love that I found
Movin is my stock and trade
I'm moving on.
I won't think of you when I'm gone

Now don't you shed a tear for me
I ain't the love you thought I'd be
etc etc etc

Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter

This song is extremely sad, and I listen to it all the time since my love life is so pathetic :|
