I have company coming over this Thursday..and I need to clean the whole upstairs!!! Yikes!!

Which is about 8 rooms and shampooing the carpets.

All of the rooms are disasterous! Thanks to my dogs. :(

Anyone have any cleaning tips..to make it go faster..or to not make it seem so bad?

I'm pretty overwhelmed. And please don't advise me to put on music, or a tv. Those don't help me, because I just want to watch the tv or sit down and listen to the music!!

Thanks!

I can't hire a company to come in and do it. I don't have enough money for that.

The best thing I can say for all of it is: Start in with 1 room and finish it, then go to the next, etc. It's not so overwhelming if you do 1 at a time. (They say you can eat an elephant if you do it one bite at a time...)

I'm handicapped and can only stand a few minutes at a time, so I'll decide which room I'm working on today, and carry a book and a timer. I know from experience it takes me about 10 minutes for my ankles and legs to quit hurting...I work till I have to sit down, set the timer and read for that long. Put down the book and go back to it. It's surprising what you can do!

Good luck!

Sorry but I can't help. The thought of shampooing eight rooms overwhelms me just thinking of it. Hope someone can come up with a solution for you.

Other than the carpet, the rest would be a cinch. Just tackle one room at a time with dusting, furniture, baseboards, etc. Hide all the clutter away. Launder bedding and curtains or drapes. Spray anything cloth with Febreze or some such product that smells fresh. Use all clean fresh smelling products. Clean the windows, window sills and frames.
Start in one corner of the room and work your way around. You'll feel good when it is done!

If the carpet is not really, really dirty, spot clean it. Sprinkle baking soda over it, let it set and then vacuum. Spray with a product that eliminates dog odors and keep them out of those rooms until your company goes home.
Air out the entire house.
Good luck.

Oh boy. I have cats, so I can sympathize!

Yes, it is easier to go one room at a time, and rent a shampooer if you don't own one. Start by going in with a garbage bag and throwing out all the trash and broken stuff. Then take a bucket of Lysol solution and slightly dampen a cleaning cloth to dust with- then wipe down everything else. Start at one side of the room and work to the other. Once you have the dusting and washing done, vacuum then shampoo. Some time during all of this you might want to take down your curtains and wash them while all the rest of this is going on.

Don't think about the whole 8 rooms at a time. Just say, 'Today I will clean this room,' and go from there. If you have time left, go to the next room. But don't punish yourself over it.

Meanwhile, you will want a way to confine the dogs.

Good luck!

I say go one room at a time and close the doors behind you. Don't allow the dogs back inside. They will only discourage you. You will be amazed at how quickly the job will go and you will be proud of what you accomplish if you just keep plugging away at it. Once you have all 8 rooms under control you can either rent or use you own steam cleaner if only to clean around the furniture. Once the company is gone you may be inspired to go back and do the whole job. But remember to limit the amount of space you will be allowing the dogs to use. This leaves more space for you.

first of all find a place to put the dogs where they won't destroy what you do. Vacuum all 8 rooms at once, including vacuuming the furniture and vacuum down cob webs, also vacuum mop boards, windows ect as needed, then go through and see what needs shampooed, then do that, go through and dust, wash mirrors, you can put a lot of things in the dish washer, I put a lot of my vases and things like that in and sometimes not for the whole cycle.. replace burned out bulbs, change sheets, sort through trash and junk, do laundry and it may help to listen to a book on tape as you clean........maybe just listen to your thoughts, I sometimes make a list of what I see needs done and mark it off as I do it and that makes me feel I am accomplishing a lot! One thing people really notice is your light fixtures, I put those in the dish washer too and dry them off by hand..........mirrors and things can be put in the dishwasher and then dryed by hand.....good luck, been there did this many times!!!!!!!!!!!

It might help to invest in a professional cleaning like kiwi services which guarantee it. For the clutter and stuff, go through it methodically and throw out what you don't use...just do it! organize yourself so it will stay that way and not be so overwhelming. One room at a time and you'll be done in a snap!

Bite the bullet and hire a company to come in and clean. Household chores suck.
