On Personal Preference:

1 Federer - predictable but groundbreaking, and a nicer person than most #1s

2 Nadal - partly for being able to pose a Big Problem for Federer, and partly for instinctively getting how and how not to act to be great for the sport

3 Nalbandian - another Federer question, plus he tends to be a level or two better at bigger events

4 Davydenko - for apparently being injury-proof; he may play more tournaments in a row than some others will all year

5 Blake - great story, very nice person, just needs not to go walkabout in deciding sets

6 Roddick - the swagger leaves me cold, though I can appreciate why others might like it.

7 Robredo - has his moments; a bit of a dark horse

8 Ljubicic - a little like the pre-major-winning Lendl; maybe a bit of a whiner?

1 Dementieva - must have enormous internal fortitude to get such results with such a non-asset of a serve and gets huge points for her social sensitivity in her US Open finals appearance

2 Mauresmo - probably the gentlest soul among all the top players, and has really paid her dues in many respects to deserve her success

3 Henin-Hardenne - glorious game, incredible competitive fire; loses points for questionable sportsmanship and too-blatant selfishness

4 Clijsters - the opposite side of the JHH coin; capable of a much better resume and refreshingly open about valuing friends over trophies, but a little too content with one major title

5 Kuznetsova - for making Martina Navratilova look like a genius

6 Sharapova - love the intensity, maybe too marketable, MAJOR mandatory deduction for the pornographic grunting

7 Hingis - great thoughtfulness on court, but lost a lot of points for making derogatory remarks about Mauresmo years ago (as well as getting into verbal fights with Richard Williams) and doesn't seem to have grown much; dating her doesn't seem to have done much good for Magnus Norman or Sergio Garcia

8 Petrova - probably capable of improving, but fell at the first big hurdle

males:

i do not intend to include federer because he's getting kind of boring and him always winnning the men's cicuit makes men's tennis so much boring

1. ---
2. nadal (he's just more exciting to watch)
3. roddick (if he changes his style to 'serve and volley' he could be a really tough contender for 1(
4. i wanted to add marcos baghdatis here because he's so exciting to watch, in any case, i'd say Nalbandian
5.Davydenko (because he is consistent)
6. Robredo (nice backhand but lacks firepower
7. Ljubicic (he is onlyat #7 because often does not seize opportunities and just plays safe
8.blake (relatively inconsistent

FEMALES:

1.henin-hardenne (the best in the women's draw nowadays, she's plagued with injuries though, henin-hardenne!)
2.hingis (i like the way that she wins not because of power but because of guile, unlike many of the players on tour, she's tennis player and not just a 'hitter of the ball')
3. dementieva (i can't imagine hw she still end up winning matches with that horrendous serve of hers)
4.sharapova (because she's maria sharapova)
5.mauresmo (she's one of the few women on tour who can serve and volley, consistent, i just like the other players more)
6.kuznetsova (nice speed and forehand)
7.clijsters (limited game, could only play baseline rallies)
8. petrova (the other players are just better)
