Or is it because it is now socially acceptable to explore your sexuality more, whereas in the past, you were more likely to be oppressed

Its a lot easier for people to be "out" but there aren't more gays than before.

Its also harder for famous people to remain closeted, so "out" they come, which makes it seem like gays are increasing in number!

considering homoseuxality is no longer a taboo subject as it first was, men and women nowadays realise that by being gay or lesbian it is nothing to be ashamed of. though of course in america and other countries across the world, it is a lot more problematic and still controversial, as it is still not considered ethical and morally acceptable for a man to fancy another bloke and a woman with another woman.

yes, i also think it is partly down to the fact that with a lot of gay and lesbian celebrities coming out of the closet, this alongside many other factors, the fact that they are well- known to certain people for being on tv, film, making hit records means the bigger the celeb and the more recognisable he/she is, the more likely and easier it is for them to come out without them believing they'd get a negative response at the end of it. and yet there have some who have been closeted homosexuals for some time - only to have recently come out.

i think that to many people of the gay and lesbian community, 'coming out' no longer means that by the end of it, they'd get beaten up for admitting their sexuality- apart from the hard core, right-wing fanatics it means that a lot more liberal people in society are comfortable about who they are and to come to terms with homosexuality and the social acceptance of it in the 21st century.

There are more only in the sense that there are more people than there were in the past. The ratio remains about the same. The main difference is the acceptance of society and the refusal of Homosexuals to be forced to hide their sexuality.

No. there aren't more gay people than before, but they have found the strength to stand up to homophobia and prejudice.

Of course there are certain ways of doing this with style, like the totally homophobic man who didn't know I was gay.

"Hi mate," he greeted me.

"Hello," I said, "you used to go out with my mother didn't you?"

"I did, a long time ago," he replied.

"Just to think, if things had worked out differently, you could have been my dad," I suggested.

"I could have been, now you mention it," he answered with an uncertain smile.

"It's probably for the best you never were," I replied, fixing him with my eyes.

"Why's that?" He looked a bit puzzled and hurt at the same time.

"Have you met my boyfriend?" I asked sweetly, as I put my arm around my guy.

The funny thing is, this man has been fine with me ever since, even if he never turns his back on me.

:)

I think you answered your own question actually.

Yes, gay women & men were definately more oppressed. Also, there was less exposure to sex/sexuality etc.

My mother's generation were led to believe that sex was only for procreation and well maybe, their husbands enjoyment.

It is easier for people to come out these days than ever before, primarily because of better education, travel accessibility and condoms!

Well i think you see more because its easier to open up now adays, and its more socially accepted. Im sure in decades to come it will be so accepted people will be bored of hearing it.
So get ready for it :P

There are more people who will openly admit to being gay. At one point you had to be ultra brave to be publically homosexual but nowerdays you can be gay without getting beaten up all day long so more people come out.

yup I think its because we are more able to be open about it.......probably not any more gay people than in the past, but there are definitely more straight people who experiment, which can be really confusing for them, I wouldnt recommend it just because its the "in" thing to do.
