Dr No was the first true bond film.........1962
Casino Royale (with david niven) was made in 1967
casino royale is a lacklustre story and Cubby Brocolli didn't feel that it could be made into a good, full action film. which he wanted to really portray Bond's action potential
david nivens Casino royale doesn't have much to do with the book of the same name, apart from sharing the same title and same main charactyer

Casino Royale wasn't the first film but was one of the first Bond films. It dates to 1967. How many actors have played James Bond? In this film alone there's more than one!
Then again there's the tv programme "Casino Royale" which was the first screen version of Bond in 1954, well before any of the Cubby Broccoli films.
For afficionados there are "official" Bond films and others.

Dr No was made in 62, Casino Royale in 67.
Casino Royale was the first book and its rights had been purchased by someone else, So Cubby Broccoli went with Dr No.
The rights have now become avaiable again

It was the first novel but Doctor No had a plot which made itself more easily made into a film.
Casino Royale was made into a film later, but as a farce comedy with 7 different James Bonds and a whole lot of stupid crazy stuff going on.

Technically it was... there was a 60's version with David Niven playing James Bond... but it was a total spoof (and badly made, it had 5 individual writers... which as you can imagine didn't make for good viewing)
Dr. No. was the 1st TRUE Bond film. which starred of course Sean COnnery (who ironically, used to deliver milk to the school where the real James Bond attended ((james bond was based on a mi6 guy, not his real name though obviously)

Have no idea, and it's really annoying. David Niven should be credited as the first James Bond, not Sean Connery!

Because Cubby Broccoli didn`t get the rights to it.
It remained for many years the ONLY original Fleming Bond not "owned" by the Broccoli family despite being the first book chronologically.

I believe that 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was the first Bond film which starred George Lazenby and Diana Rigg

In a sense it was, but it was made as a comedy so most people don't 'count' it as a true Bond film.
