Why do they even care? Isn't it what's on the inside that counts? And why is being one hair color or another, having designer jeans, etc. such a big issue? How does that even matter in the real world?

It's just the way humankind "works." Just like other animals, our appearance can determine how well we fit in with the herd/society and makes it more likely to find a mate. It's engrained into our DNA, so, even if we are married we do this. I would argue that teenagers (and others that need to "fit in") rely on such grooming/dressing practices as a way to be a part of the group. They methods of becoming more attractive/accepted have become more advanced, but the reasons are the same.

I feel the same way. I don't enjoy dressing up that much. I would like to put on a t-shirt and a pair a jeans and that would be it. Once in a while I would like to dress up because it makes me feel good

I care about what I look like becasue I want to mkae a good impression to people. As much as everyone says it doesnt, I know that looks really do influence a persons opinion about you. Plus, looking good makes me feel better about myself and makes me more confident. Who wouldnt want that?

People like to look down on others "haves" look down on "have nots" also peer pressure to conform with the ascribed way to be is strong.

I agree--too much time, energy, and money is spent on the out-side when it's the iside that really counts...

Because people care about what other people think. And how other people think about you and view you is partly (especially first of all) affected by what they see.

Because society tells us to worry about it and we always do what we are told .
Just like cattle .

well for me its not how other people think of me it is how I think of myself. If I have my hair done and my makeup on I just feel more confident with myself.
