Louis and Boris are good buddies. Their problem is that Louis is only 1 foot tall, but Boris is 6 feet tall. On January 1, 1800, Louis takes a magic potion that will make him grow 4 inches taller every year. He will grow at a constant rate until he is the same size as Boris. On January 1, 1800, Boris takes a magic potion that will make him shrink 12 inches every year. He will shrink at a constant rate until he is the same size as Louis.

1) On what date will they be the same size? Month, day, year.
2) How tall will they be when they are the same size?

OK, so call Louis' height in inches L and Boris' B. L = 12 + 4t and B = 72 - 12t where t is the number of years, and we're solving first for t when L = B. So 12 + 4t = 72 - 12t--->12 + 16t = 72---> 16t = 60. The number of years is 60/16 or 3.75 exactly, so they are the same height 3/4 of the way through 1803. 365*0.75 = 273.75, so the 274th day, which is Oct. 1, 1803.

Their heights can be calculated from the equation we started with: L = 12 + 4t. 12 + 4*3 3/4--->12 + 12 + 3---27 inches. Check it by calculating B = 72 = 12t. 72 - 12*3 3/4--->72-36-9--->27 inches.

Louis and Boris will be the same size on September 30th, 1803. They will each be 27 inches tall or 2 feet and 3 inches (2 & 1/4')
THe day wouldn't be the 274th day of 1803 because the clock would not have struck 12 midnight so it would not be October first , but rather the 273.75 day or September 30th at 6 pm

They'll be the same height on the 274th day of 1803 (3/4 of the way through the year), which would be October 1. They will both be 2 feet, 3 inches tall.
