Same bad feeling here. I am afraid that all H*** will break loose. I really think this is why the Iraqis want us to remain there, indefinitely. High alert time, all eyes throughout the world are focused on the verdict.

I hope it does not happen in view of the awful violence of the last 4 weeks, but I suspect there will be more killings as the Sunnis (Saddam's religious group) make their disapproval known. Especially if the appeal is turned down and Saddam is executed. You have to remember that the Sunni's were the backbone of the army and police under Saddam's rule, and when the US 'governor', Paul Bremner, stupidly disbanded the Iraq army and police force, en masse, as one of his first actions after the invasion, he released into the population a lot of disgruntled and well armed people who, along with 'imported' insugents, form the main group of Iraqis fighting the Coallition forces. Overall, the people of Iraq now hate the Coallition forces (particularly the Americans) much more than they loathed Saddam, thus the situation is likely to get a lot worse. The simplest way to understand the present Iraq situation is to put yourself in their place... in other words, imagine if the Iraqis had invaded your country. You'd soon come to see them _not_ as liberators from a hated president, but as an occupying force that has gradually wrecked your countrys's infrastructure, and made everyday life utterly miserable for the majority (and especailly for women).. This morning, in the wake of the news about Saddam's trial verdict, several Iraqis were interviewed for their reactions. One of them made a very telling statement (which has been true for most Middle East countries for centuries) when he said "Iraq needs a strong, iron and fire leader." That doesn't say much for reputation of the current Iraq government - which is seen by may Iraqis as a fairly impotent 'American puppet'. As far as your query goes about "Will it bring peace?"... well, let's all hope it does, but the history of Iraq suggests peace might be a long time coming.

They are already predicting more violence if that happens. Saddam made the remark, "For every 1000 we kill, there will be 1000 more." And, sad to say, he's probably right. Even in court, I think they let him get away with far too much!
