Always be yourself because the strain of trying to be what others want can only make you ill and unhappy.
Life is far too short to be what others want you to be, and you will miss out on what you really want to be.

Very good question.
During the whole life, we are influenced and "guided" by other people. They call this "education". But if you follow the manners and ways of thinking of others, how can we progress and explore new ways, how can we invent things if each generation duplicates itself?? Also nonconformist people can be either great inventors or great gangsters.
On the other hand some basic knowledge which has been accumulated during the time will be lost if it is not transferred to newer generations.
So how can we solve this dilemma??
My answer is: Be influenced by great teachers but not assimilated (remain critical).
Learn from others, and add your personality inside.
Don't be afraid to wear 5-years-old jeans trousers, since the fashion can be also back, and you can always stick a Gucci or Ralph Lorain sticker on your trousers, nobody will find out whose trousers are the last fashioned.
And when you look at yourself in the mirror, always say what a wonder full person you are with your old trousers and all what you have decided to do with your life.

TOTALLY
unless you are REALLY mean and grouchy to others (and you should listen to what they say about being nicer and more cheerful) you should be a person that YOU feel comfortable being
living up to others' expectations only makes you unhappy. its stressful and makes you spend time and money that is better put elsewhere. you could be the ugliest, stupidest person in the world but extremely nice and kind and helpful and be much loved just as you are.

Well, I have had several problems with how I am and how others see me. It is quite different. That makes me really annoyed because it's hard for me to change to how others want me to be. But if it's a bad trait that I have, then I try to improve. That doesn't mean I change completely. I prefer to be the way I am and that's all that matters to me.

man I am so myself all the time.
sometimes I even embarrass myself and people that don't even know me..
no but really...
I am always me, myself and I..never acting like some one else...
I have had this motto all my life..I am me, and if others do not like it..they can leave the room..because I am having to much fun being ME.....
you all should be WHO you are..no matter who, what it is....and do not let others change you...every one says I am an individual...and you look at them and they are all copying the way others dress.. and or walk and talk....what individual are they..when they are acting just like millions of others...
Be you..and no one else....
smile
good luck

You must be yourself--who else can be you? You shouldn't have to hurt others to be yourself, but sometimes they think you are hurting them. Just be true to yourself, and be as kind as you can. You wouldn't be doing anyone a favor by putting on an act.

Some people try to keep up with the Jones if you know what I mean. I can only be me. If they don't like it I can't change what people think or feel. I can only speak for myself and my up bringing. People who are mentally and physically sick is a totally different ball game.

I feel great being myself and not following a crowd.
when I was in elementary school it was difficult.
but I put it in my mind that it was abnormal to do things I did not wanted to do because the popular crowd was not accepting me.
I was alone for a while and was not easy.
Jesus cares and never left me. I open my eyes and follow him.

I am a very good person. Why wouldn't I be myself? The best service we can do for ourselves, is to be exactly who we are. Sometimes, we tend to get a bit lost, and not know who exactly it is that we are. But, I am a firm believer that everyone is unique and that most are worth getting to know. You would not want a world of robots. Good Luck!!!!!

I was raised to feel good about myself, that I was very important my thoughts and needs mattered, and I was to respect myself and not let others disrespect me.
I have always believed this and even more so as I get older.
