when I worked in greenhouses, I learned that any plant in which magnesium gets tied up should have epsom salts poured around the plant once a week....example is bouganvilliea, roses,
Here is a site on garden web that tells you all about the value of epsom salt and why.

I put a tablespoon of epsom salt in the hole before I put in tomato plants and pepper plants. It helps to put strong stems on the plants to help support the fruit. I do not know of any other things that epsom salt is used for. But I will try it with my gardenias next year.

Once every 2 weeks, mix 1 tablespoon of Epsom's salts and 1 tablespoon plant food per gallon of water. Water plants as usual. Believe it or not, the salt will NOT kill your plants! It helps them absorb the plant food, and makes them greener.

I have lots of plants, never gave them epsom salts. I have heard that hydrangeas like copper nails in the soil around the base of the plant. Supposed to make the white blooms turn blue.

Gardenia, camelia, roses, like epsom salts........all acid loving plants can be fertilized with E salt. cheaper than MirAcid (miracle gro with acid) and other acid based fertilizers. Coffee grounds (used or new) and tea bags apply as well. stop and smell the roses!!

Rusty nails supply iron. An other inexpensive alternative to "copperas" fertilizer.

epsum salts is magnesium which is one of the trace elements required by plants.
Gardenias use a lot of magnesium around spring time, and their leaves start to yellow.
All plants require magnesium but some more than others.
Nails will provide iron as they rust and may also alter the pH
