Bigg_Dogg is 100% correct... if the house is a newer home they were built WAY too tight and they do not allow for any draft to be created... If you want a simple fix is to crack a window a bit however this is a pointless thing to do because you are letting in cold air... Do yourself a favor and return those logs and buy a vent free set... 2 major benefits are the cost a lot less to operate and 2 they actually heat your house as well as look good... But I HIGHLY recommend you have carbon monoxide detectors in your home!!!!! That goes with ANY gas burning item not just because of the log set... Hope I helped you a bit as well...

i assume u meant u opened the outside door of ur house? if so then u need a fresh air supply to the fireplace...most fire boxes allow for this....its a knock out in the back side of the box.....ur hvac man should be able to install it with no problems.....if the house is under a r old call ur contractor and ask him to do it....

also, ur flue has to warm up, needs to get hot enough to draw the smoke up into the flue.....if its ur fire doors u were talking about that u opened and it worked again, fresh air supply.....

i would suggest u seal off the damper and take back the logs and get a vent less set of logs....u will loose about 40% of ur heat up the flue......
