I had a turtle before (a few yrs ago) and one day in winter, it didn't move no matter how much I poke at him. I thought it was dead.
Now when I come to think if it, could it be hibernating?? Did I kill him by dumping it to the trash???

Hibernating turtles hide. Pond turtles hide in the mud at the bottom of the pond, land turtles hide in deep burrows.

If it was visible, and especially if its limbs were hanging out, it was deceased.

It's possible your turtle was hibernating. Depends on the turtle. Some hibernate...some don't. The ones that do usually don't just go into hibernation though. It's a gradual thing. They gorge themselves with food for a little while, then all of a sudden they slow down dramatically. Then they find a safe place to hide and go into full hibernation. Of these sequential events didn't take place, then something else may have happened. A sick turtle will also slow down their eating schedule...or stop eating entirely. Unless a vet was able to look at it...it's impossible to say.

Well, if the house was cold, it was hibernating. If it was room temperature, the turtle was dead.

THE TURTLES WILL BE DRY...AND THE SKIN WILL NOT BE CLAMMY...AND THE ...SKIN WILL TURN HARD..AND THEY WILL TURN COLOR IF IT'S NO LONGER ALIVE.....EVEN IF IT IS IN HIBERNATION.......IF IT IS MOVED BY YOUR HAND....IT WILL MOVE ITS HEAD OUT OF THE SHELL. IF IT IS DEAD....IT WILL NOT MOVE.......I HOPE YOU DIDN'T JUST THROW IT AWAY WITHOUT CHECKING TO MAKE SURE FIRST.......HOW SAD!
I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT. :(
