hello.im a bass player and ther really is no "one" greatest drummer,it really is subjective, bearing in mind im swallowing my own choice!there are far too many great drummer who have lived and died a lot of people say keith moon but what about buddy rich.at the time he was well ahead of his time,as a bass player a good drummer is someone who can hold a groove and keep time. showing your licks and over playing doesn't make you a great drummer, in my opinion.i think the fact that kieths character shone past the kit proved that drummers aren't just people who sit at the back but are still as interesting has singers and guitarists!also speaking as a member of the rythmn section to make your way as a drummer is very hard and you should not have to die to prove your worth.honestly i believe unless you play a bass and have tried to play to a rubbish drummer, you really do not know what a great drummer truely is ,

Best drummer is Johanne James of Kyrb Grinder ..... this guy is amazing live. (The Classic Rock society actually voted him best UK drummer of 2004/5)

As for Guitarist, there are so many out there it's impossible to choose.

EDIT
What's with all the Ginger Baker/Buddy Rich type answers?

Y'know the weird & sad thing about current rock? FAR fewer people care about chops anymore. More of a big deal is made over what song is in high rotation on MTV or the radio as opposed to who can Really play their instrument.

So- I have no clue who's good now. If I hadda guess, maybe the guys in Radiohead.

70s rock rules!
