Sand is not only for saltwater and it wont raise your ph unless you buy crushed coral. Here is a link all about sand in tropical tanks, http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=131373
It tells you everything you need to know about it.

Yes you can use sand in a FW tank, it's not just for SW tanks. I have it in several of my FW tanks. Does not raise the ph levels either. Just ignorant people making ignorant comments.

You can use the special aquarium sands(expensive), pool filter sand, or even children's play sand. I know a lot of people have used the pool filter sand. I went with the kid's play sand. Make sure it's silicone free. You just put some in a bucket, use your hose and keep filling it and dumping the water, and just keep rinsing it (about 6 times) till the water runs clear. Scoop it into the tank, and wait for the sand to settle a bit before turning on the filter. For a SW tank, you want to use the special aquarium sand, some kind of funky algae develops with the other types of sand.

And, I've actually found it's much easier to clean then gravel, because the poop and food sits on the top of the sand and doesn't mix into the gravel.

yup... aquarium sand be be bought at the store.

you'll have to clean it more often because the poop and detritus just sit on top of the sand unlike gravel.

Sand in the freshwater aquarium will make the water extremely hard, so unless you are keeping African cichlids, you could possibly kill your fish. Please, stick to gravel.
