So, I just changed the spark plugs on my 2002 Jetta 1.8T. I did this in an effort to resolve a stalling problem, and it seems to have done the trick. Now, my car is knocking a little and seems to be "chugging" a little at idle. I adjusted the gap using a ruler and my eye.... I don't have one of those fancy adjustment tools... I thought I did a good job, but could this be my problem?

You need to be WAY careful with a turbo engine when changing things like spark plugs, it's very easy to blow that engine up or do other serious damage. Anytime a turbo engine "knocks" "pings" or anything like that it needs to be looked into because it sounds like detonation, #1 killer of turbo engines. A ruler belongs in a seamstress' toolbox, you need a feeler gauge, and are you sure you bought the correct type plugs? Very important. If you are not sure, have someone who knows check it for you. A professional tune up is a lot cheaper than a motor. And from my experiance with V-dubs, the mass airflow sensor acts up alot and can cause your original problem, make sure the ducting from your airfilter to turbo and from turbo to engine are completely sealed, and don't even think about putting a k&n filter on it, you WILL kill the mass airflow sensor. Those fancy adjustment tools cost about a dollar. You need at least 92 octane in that engine. Make sure all the plug wires are tight and not causing a misfire. And make sure you used the plugs the manual called for.

A RULER and YOUR EYE?why go to all that trouble ?just bend the electrodes straight out and let the pistons gap them for ya.oh ,make sure you did'nt cross some wires.

could be or you may have got a plug wire bad or on the wrong plug

TIMING is out, you need to get the proper equipment, and know what you are doing.
