i have died many times in my dreams usually by being
eaten, hit with an ax, drowning, or falling of a cliff.
i always wake up so i know im not dead.
i heard some people stop breathing for several seconds in their sleep.
could that be why i die

Dying in dream could mean you are losing confidence or giving up something in life. Being eaten, hit on ax, drowned, fell off a cliff are ways of escape from responsibilities. That is why you projected that in dream. Basically, you want to vent out your helpless conscience in dream.
However, stop breathing for several seconds such as choking because of bad air-circulation could also contribute to the dream because mind and body are one. Sometimes, we dream because what our bodies ask us to.

I've dreamed about being torn apart by a pack of dogs, and blown to pieces by a bomb, and woken to find I have heartburn (acid reflux).

there's another way too. DONT play any voilant or disturbing games/movies before going to bed.
you dont Have to meditate, just relax to some nice instrimental (newage *techno, trance*) music. in fact if you play it WHILE you are going to sleep you wil fall asleep faster and have a much more pleasent night all around.

I believe it's impossible to die in a dream, unless you're sleepwalking that is.

Something or someone in your life is causing you pain or stress and it's manifesting itself in your dreams.
It has nothing to do with you actually dying.
