Salvation Army is a really good place to start. They have Christmas Angels program that you can sign up for and people will buy your child a gift or two. This isn't their thrift store it's at their local mission headquarters.
Also Wal Mart has a program so you can sign up for a very similar deal.

Depends on which country you're in. Toys for tots in the US as well as the Salvation Army.

In Ontario you apply through your welfare benefits , it should come with the end of november cheque. Generally there are places set up in the city or town where you live that will let you sign yourself up for toys and possibly a hamper of food.

The city where I live has a program called Santa's Helpers that distributes toys.

Some retail stores like Walmart, Zellers in Canada have mitten trees or trees where you can put a child's name and the gift they want.

I will say that usually tho you have to show some kind of welare cheque or means test to qualify.

My little city also has christmas dinner on Christmas Day for those who are alone or have no family so they can participate in the celebration.

My mom goes through Catholic Charities for the family we "adopt" each year. I bet if you typed "Christmas adopt a family" into Yahoo Search, other organizations would come up. To narrow the search, add your town or city name.

Update: I just typed those words in and dozens of sites came up but specific to cities, so definately add your town or city name.

If nothing comes up, contact the churches in your area, I would wager they would have programs.

I tried 1 year at the salvation army, they do it every year all you do is call and bring down the 411 on your kids and you, fill out a paper, and a wish list.
