AMD has a well thought architecture for their chips. Their chips work better and more efficiently.
INTEL used to be good, but I think they got too big and too greedy and started to ignore the importance of making sure their technology works.
AMD one day will replace INTEL's dominance in the marketplace.

AMD has the "low-end," meaning less than eight hundred to a thousand bucks (total system price minus monitor). Core 2 Duo (Intel's newest line) is the best, but for the casual user, even a (cringe) Celeron will work just fine.
An Athlon 64 or Sempron is what I'd recommend if you want something to last a few years but aren't a power user.
An Athlon X2 is what I'd recommend if you want it to be useful for a long time and/or want to do multimedia stuff or "light" gaming.
Core 2 Duo all the way if you're a power user and/or want a computer that you can use for a good six years without it getting on your nerves much.
You'll notice there is no Pentium 4 or Pentium D mentioned in there. That's because they are hot (which means noisy because of a faster fan) and slow compared to even the "old" Athlon 64s and X2s. P4s and PDs are the cheapest, but they are cheap for a reason. And please don't buy a Celeron, they are worthless and Semprons can be bought for the same price.

Right now, for anything $180+, nothing beats the Core 2 Duo by Intel, that is a fact. For under that, then you are better off with the AMDs. As for in the future, the 4x4 is not going to change anything, but the new K8Ls from AMD due out next summer most likely will. AMD will probably regain the lead with that release.

Yes, agreed, a Core 2 Duo processor is the best you can get, again, for now. Though, since those released, AMD has dropped the prices of many of their processors making them an excellent value. Still, if performance is your concern then a Core 2 Duo cannot be beat and they overclock like champs.
