Cal is short for "California." Why just "California"? It's the same reason the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is just "Michigan" or the University of Texas in Austin is just "Texas" -- Berkeley is the oldest and premier institution of the University of California system. Hence, the school is called California, or just "Cal" for short.

Your unweighted or UC GPA would be a lot more useful. At the schools you mentioned specifically, your SAT score is really going to hurt you, as you'd need closer to a 2100 to be competitive.

Because Cal Berkeley has a big program, bigger than Irvine, Davis, San Diego and other UC schools. UCLA has already identified with there name so Cal has rights to the name because of there size.

just like the reason why Notre Dame is called Notre Dame, and why Nebraska is called Nebraska. UC Berkeley is call Cal, because they are the University of California Berkeley, people don't want to say the entire thing so they just say Cal...University of Notre Dame - Notre Dame.....University of Nebraska - Nebraska....Hope that helps
