It's my understanding that annulment applies only to particular criteria of a marriage, such as short term, or never consummated with sex, or involving extreme circumstances. As with most marital laws, it is up to each state to set the requirements for an annulment.

In general, I don't like the idea of an annulment. The Catholic Church has one or two kinds of annulments that it grants, including a Papal annulment granted by the Pope. I divorced my first wife on the grounds of abandonment. Some time later I learned that she sought a Papal annulment which I had to sign off on. I didn't even know she'd become a Catholic. Only a few years later did I learn that she had entered a convent to become a nun. The irony of this was that she had been the opposite of a nun when I knew her.

I think it is crappy especially if children are involved. Except in rare circumstances, how can a marriage of many years be denied? Why would you want to act like it never happened? I would question the motives of someone who wanted an annulment of a long term marriage.

Annulments are for marriages 3 months or less, I believe. I don't think you can get an annulment if you have kids either.

You can't annul a long term marriage. You have to file it as a divorce.

My opinion is if you have good cause and witnesses go for it. I am doing this so I can continue my faith in my religion.

I think annulment is a crock. It is the churches way of pardoning their members so that they can continue to attend mass and receive the sacraments. You still have to go through the divorce procedures. If you have consummated your marriage, then all you need is an attorney.
