A short-term memory lasts in it's 'storage' area for about 10 seconds or so. Depending on the significance of the memory and it's circumstances, the memory will go through a part of the brain called the amygdala where an emotion or sensation is attributed to it. From there it earns a space in the cerebral cortex to potentially reside forever.
