Wow...it sounds like the majority here, assume that all homeless men are illiterate, lazy alcoholics. That really surprises me. As an intelligent woman, who has been unemployed for two months, after having been out of work on Workman's Comp for four months, I can tell you, life situations can change in a minute, and sometimes you have no control whatsoever. over it.
Personally, I would sit and talk to the man. Find out what brought him to this place in life, and then offer what I could, in the way of, a meal, a pack of cigarettes, a ride to the shelter, some money, a hug...maybe even a cold beer on a hot day. I know from experience, that some form of normalcy, does wonders for a person's psyche.

I think this question is a hard one. We all know how many homeless people out there would buy beer with any money you'd give them, but what about the people that strive to get back up on their feet? Should we just judge them like the rest, and assume that they are spendthrifts themselves?
As an honest answer, someone who witnessed another fellow human being living in such poverty should guide them back to a better life. Giving them five bucks for the day won't guarentee them survival.

I give homeless people money if i stumble upon them, because a Pint of Jack, face it thats a lot of money to spend on an alchy bum.

I just give them money and some food. I know what they will do with the money. Giving them food just makes me feel better knowing they aren't hungry.

He is homeless because he wants to be. He does not want to work or contribute anything to society. He just wants to take. He uses all the services that tax paying citizens pay for, and wants a free ride. Give them nothing. Try to give them a job, and they will refuse it.
I people quit giving them handouts, maybe they will become a productive citizen, or starve.
