Working at Wal-Mart was the worst job I ever had. I worked there for 3 years. Why so long, if I hated it so much? Because I was also a college student and the one good thing about them is that they were able to work around a crazy forever changing schedule. My biggest problem was that they would always ask you to work late, but when the end of the week came they would tell you to cut your hours because they weren't allowing overtime. That would have been ok, but they wouldn't let you leave early, you had to take an extra long lunch break. That could mean a 2 hour lunch. They also do not like to follow doctor's notes. I had a friend who just came back from back surgery and was not allowed to stand for more than a couple hours at a time and could not do a lot of lifting, they made her work full 8 hour shifts on register. Trust me, they are not a very good company to work for and have very little respect for their employees, umm associates.

Suckless, if you are a woman trying to go beyond the cash register into Management. I work at Wal-Mart. Pay is decent for me since I'm not educated beyond high school.
But I have been here since the place opened 8 years ago, never missed a day, always on time, never a problem with the register receipts. I do smile and give great Customer Service, I really love my job, but want to get ahead. The management has given me several raises, most of them when I requested one. They constantly award me with Employee of the...., but no promotion. I get the story, "but you're so good at the front end..." They have offered me Head Cashier, I did that for 50 cents more per hour, and was not worth the headaches for the pay, so I stepped down. I train most of the cahsiers and even the current Head Cashier.
Then I found out the some of the MALE department employees had been offered a few of the Department Management postions that I was passed over - they having even less (only one had an AA degree) - education and experience there and in Retail in general than I do.
In my town, I will not be able to make the money I do now if I began a new job, so quitting is not an option, unless I move.
So, they are, IMHO, suckless to work for.

Worked at Wal-mart for 8 years. Will never do that again. The management sucked. What kept me there for so long is the people I worked with. All wonderful ppl. Made a lot of friends there.
They act like you are so important to their company when in reality you are nothing. They will drop you like a hot potato if your pay gets to be too much. Don't expect to make very much money if you work there. Medical insurance?? Only if you can afford such a thing. I couldn't.
To the person who said something about the treatment being according to your attitude...I worked my *ss off in that place, always smiling for the customers, did whatever I was asked(I have a daughter, I needed the job). I still was treated like crap. I even went to work 3rd for them because they needed someone. You...well I...mean nothing to them.

I try to avoid Wal-Mart at all possible costs. True, they have lower prices on some things, but I hear they treat their workers like slaves. They got in trouble recently for making workers stay overtime and not pay them for it. I rather go to grocery stores, becuase they have more food variety and they have double and triple coupons. I also shop Target because the quality of the clothes and items are better. The store is also pleasant to hang out in even if you don't plan on buying anything. Target also gets guests clothing designers like Luella and Paul + Joe.

I love Wal-Mart! How can a Normal thinking person NOT want to pay lower prices for things! And more IMPORTANTLY, what business is it of anybody other than Wal-Mart employees to complain about pay? And, if the Wal-Mart employees don't like the pay - get another JOB that pays better!

No. They will never have world domination cuz of people like me who don't like their store. I really don't like going into a Wal-mart. Has nothing to do with globalization, the wages they pay or the small businesses that get hurt. I just walk into one of their stores and can't wait to leave. BAD shopping experience.

I love to shop at Wal-Mart....so my opinion is very good.
I have worked at 3 different ones.
The one in Orlando, FL was the best one! I was treated very good by both co-workers and management.
I also worked at one in PA- they were kind of disorganized; and indifferent to their employees. It wasn't awful, though.
And I also worked at one in TN. I'm not even going to go there. lol
