All time:
1. Michael Jordan: The guy won 6 championships, 6 MVP's and was one of the best scorers and defensive players statistically.
2. Wilt Chamberlain: He scored 100 points in one game and was the best scorer the NBA has ever had statistically.
3. Bill Russel: He blocked so many shots on the Celtics that people stopped counting.
Present:
1. LeBron James: He has better statistics that Michael Jordan had early in his career and is still younger than 70% of rookies in the league right now
2. Kobe Bryant: He has an attitude, but you can't deny his talent. Has won 3 championships to my knowledge on the best team of all time, scores many points, and steals the ball many times. He has been compared to Michale Jordan many times.
3. Dwyane Wade: He is young, but don't underestimate the guy. He has already won a championship and has improved the Heat from the team they used to be.

I love that people always ask this question. I think that Kobe Bryany is alright. I personally love Steve Nash. He's a team player, has a lot of heart, and all of his stats are sky high! I think it's impressive also that a Canadian can out-ball most "token" basketball players, and he's short by NBA standards (6'2"). He's amazing and definately deserved MVP the past two years.

Currently the best player in the NBA is Dwayne Wade. He was the reason they won the NBA finals last year. He can drive to the basket like no other and now he had a greatly improved jump shot. He is imposable to defend against.

All time?
I really like Oscar Roberson and Magic Johnson. Terrific all around players who, because they had the ball, could take over games and still make others around them better.
That being said -- Jordan, Bird, Chamberlain, Russel, West are all names one only needs to use their last names and everyone still knows who exactly that is.
Today?
The coaches pick Kobe as the best player. So I'll go by them.
LeBron is very very good but I think we are still dazzled by his enormous potential -- if he stays healthy he could be one of the best ever.
It's hard to ignore Steve Nash -- MVP for two years for good reason, I think he's a little rickety now (he's 32 I think).
And you have to really consider winners -- everyone is talking d-wade and no one is talking Iverson. I think they both are great, but not the best.
So, for today's players -- I'll take Kobe as best all around -- talent, skill, rings, winning and desire.

Micheal Jordon is arguably the best player of all time. Currently I give the title to Lebron James.
