I live in Connecticut and this fall, I couldn't help but notice how many acorns there are this year! There are hundreds and hundreds in my yard this year... what causes this? Was it all the rain we had over the spring, or does it mean we will have an especially harsh winter? Is there a special acorn cycle.... like every 10 years is an especially heavy year? Please let me know, I have been very curious all season!

I've always heard there will be a really cold , icy winter if the oak trees produce an over abundance of acorns.
Since acorns are seeds , nature is replenishing seeds to replace those small trees that may be killed.
I hope this helps answer your question.

Our live oak (in northern California) goes crazy with acorns every two years or so. It does seem to be a cycle, not anything to do with weather. We also have a cherry tree that produces every other year.

I was at a large NorCal nursery for an event recently, and I asked this question. The person there said that indian lore was that it would be a wet winter. For us in drought stricken California, I hope this is true.
