I can play guitar and sing a bit. How do I improve on this to the point where I can get work pubs? I have seen other acts who play and sing along to backing tracks. Where do I get these and what do I need to play them on? Any help is much appreciated.

I'm not surethe equipment need for what you want to do, but my best segestion is not to ask these idiots on here, if you are really sierius about it get strieght from the horses mouth. next time you see an act like what you want to do, durring the break just go up and sak, they will be more than happy to tell you what you want to know.
as a sound tech people sak me all kinds of question from where they can go to learn how to to sound to what kind of equipment I' running when I'm working a show and I'm more than happy to explaine the tools of my trade.

Backing tracks can be bought from most decent music shops.
They come in a range of formats to suit your equipment.
I've used Midi and Minidisc in the past, but I believe MP3 is the new in-format.
If you decide to go down the midi route, you'll need a good sequencer or soundcard, but the advantages are many-fold.
Firstly, you can edit the individual tracks. Increase the drums, delete the guitar line, change the piano to a bass, things like that.
Plus, if you search hard enough on the net you can normally find the backing tracks you want for free from midi download sites, and they're generally very small files.

Well the most popular form of backing tracks are on Dat tape its usually in digital and does not scratch like a cd. You can use a cd and it should work just fine but some cd players will not play some types of burned cd's. Believe me its happened to me. You will have to go to a studio to record. What happens is you would lay down all the vocals. When they mix it down, they would leave the backing vocals at the same level but lower the main vocals so you can sing them live. Its not easy to explain if you've never recorded in a studio but its no hard to do.
