No, it is not particularly painful. Basically, it so simple you could do it yourself (if you were not huge and pregnant with a belly you can't reach around... and if you were wearing gloves... and if you knew what you were feeling for in the first place= don't try this at home) All your doctor is checking for is if your cervix is opening up, the space is measured in finger tips which he or she equates to centimeters. When she can fit a whole finger tip in that space, you are one centimeter dilated. The goal is 10, but you are not considered to be in active labor until after 3 centimeters. I am infact at one centimeter right now, 36 weeks, I could stay at one centimeter for a month or I could go into labor tomorrow.. every woman is different, so try not to judge how soon labor will start on how many centimeters you are dilated. The only vaguely uncomfortable part about the procedure is the fact that your doctor is sticking a hand up your vagina... which may or not be ready for it... other than a little discomfort, (especially if like me your back is killing you already) this is not a painful procedure.

They take there hand up the vagina to feel inside of you and it may hurt you and you might not even really feel it, with my first it didn't bother me but with my second one everytime the doc would do it she would hurt and make me bleed for a day.....so it just depends how sensitive you are down there. Good Luck

They insert their fingers into your girly bits and feel the cervix. If tthey can fit a certain amount of fingers in your cervix, then they can tell you how much dilated you are.

They stick their finger up insdie you and feel your cervix. If they can fit one fingertip inside you are 1 cm dilated, 2 fingertips 2 cm etc... It doesn't really hurt but it is uncomfortable.

They have to do an internal examination. In my experience it was quite uncomfortable, not quite painful, but it doesn't take too long.
