I don't know what you're struggling with, but I found my songwriting has improved over time because I've studied literature (in particular the theory and writing of poetry) and music theory. Active listening to songs helps a lot, but sometimes you need a "push" to break beyond your comfort zone. This is where formal instruction in music theory may be quite helpful. I also found when I expanded the genres of music I studied, I was better able to incorporate elements from each genre in the songs I wrote.
The other thing you can do is practice, practice, practice. Even if it means writing bits of total schlock, get into the habit of being a little creative every day. It has been said that "chance favors the prepared mind", and in creative endeavors this is absolutely true. No athlete would dream of running a marathon without training, and your daily practice writing little bits of music will condition you to write the cantata you hear walking by the river one night.

I'm a songwriter/musician in the northwest . What i use for basic info in writing is finding a solid topic to write about. Also, i feel that sequence of events matters - in other words a starting point end the sestablished finish point, this doesn't always mean having an actual ending, but a solid point to end on. You can see what i mean in a few of my songs. Keep in mind i write mostly acoustic or folk music, and use these principals. my songs can be heard here: www.cdbaby.com/cd/rayburns

Hey mate Im a singer/music author and the very first thing you want is thought! You must think to be influenced, move four a stroll, begin a battle or debate with a shopkeeper or name a mate you have not obvious in years and move off the way you think approximately that. Always convey a pen & paper, begin vaccumming and sing loud, sing some thing comes out! Can't support you with writing track on sheets however if in case you have a vioce recorder take it with you far and wide and if you have a melody, music or beat to your head humm or sing it into your recorder and put it aside.

Well, maybe listen to a bunch of other people's songs just to see what kind of formulas they use (verse/chorus/verse/hook/chorus..etc). You shouldn't try to force yourself to write either when you aren't feeling very productive. I had a bad case of writer's block for a while because I was doing that. I stopped thinking too much and now it's all coming back to me. This also sounds kind of weird, but stay healthy. It works for me anyway. I feel like I can think so much more clearly when I am in good health and taking care of myself as opposed to spending my nights out drinking.

Brainstorm! Set up a good thinking place and just think! The best songs come from the heart.
