ac is alternating current and dc is direct current. AC current is used in residential and commercial construction. DC is primarily used for heavy machinery.

Direct current (DC) is the basis of electricity. The idea is that some materials (wires for example) are comprised of atoms, and the electrons in these atoms, are not tightly bound to the element. For that reason, under certain circumstances electrons willl flow between the atoms in a particular direction (From positive to negative). Since the electrons flow in this one direction "conceptually" this idea got the name of "Direct Current". DC is used in batteries, inside electronic components, and was the basis of the original electrical systems developed by Thomas Edison.

The problem with DC is that it attenuates over distances. The original DC generation systems Edison developed could only provide DC current to about 1 mile distance.

Various people began working on a scheme called Alternating currrent (AC) which employed a generator which manages to reverse the flow of electrons at a fixed interval. AC can be "stepped up" and "stepped down" using transformers, which allows it to traverse long distances through the use of high voltage, and then transforming that voltage to a safe level just before it enters your house.

AC eventually became the standard for the world's public electrical grid. However DC is still very much with us, since as I mentioned, Batteries provide DC, and devices use DC internally.

As mentioned, AC/DC did at one time become slang for sexual preference. Someone who was bisexual was said to be AC/DC because they could go both ways.

I doubt that the famous australian band came up with the name in relation to that idea, but rather, I think it was simply because they liked the idea of pure engergy or electricity, and because electricity provides power. As a rock band, electricly amplified instruments are what differentiates musicians of the modern era from the acoutic folk, jazz and blues bands that preceeded them.

ac/dc is an electrical term for alternating current/direct current. somehow in the 70's it also got to mean you were gay/bi (don't know how that got started) guess they took the name cause it was controversial at the time and would get them some attention, so everyone would know what a kick-*** band sounds like!

AC/DC is a term for electricity current I think, but when I was a kid we used it as a term for people who swing both ways.

Maybe this will tell you the reason they are named this, I haven't read it all:

I think the reference in their name was primarily to electricity. However, AC/DC is also slang for bi-sexual.
