There is a partial ban on non-human primates in Texas. You need to familiarize yourself with the local laws as well as the state laws on the subject. Just because something is legal in the state doesn't mean it's legal in your county, township or city.
Why would you want a monkey anyway? They make lousy pets. They are messy, loud, demanding, dirty and carry diseases that humans can catch, like hepatitis. They bite and they bite hard and sometimes, if you have a male, they'll "play" with themselves in front of company, if they're not busy throwing poop.
Like a child? Monkeys are not children, they are wild animals and to treat them as anything but would not be fair to the monkey. In order to be available to the pet trade they get ripped from their mothers when they are tiny and never get properly socialized.
Don't take my word for it though. Here's a website that'll show you a few things. Be warned, some of it is graphic, but the pictures are real. Go to Articles/Info and Testimonials and watch the PowerPoint presentation too.

It is illegal in most areas to have a pet monkey, and for good reason.
Monkeys are wild animals that are most unsuitable as pets. They need to be around others of their kind, NOT people, are very aggressive and quite difficult to train. They are VERY strong and a fairly small monkey can inflict serious damage on an adult human.
They are noisy in the extreme and prone to flinging poop all over the house.
Seriously bad move.
If you want a child, adopt one.
If you want a pet, get a dog at the pound.

Probably not.
And just because something's cool does NOT mean you want to have it as a child. Sure, the prospect may sound cool right now, but 50 years from now when you've got a dead monkey on your hands what are you going to do. And besides, what would you feed it? Bananas?

It seems like people always start out with the best kindest intentions to raise a monkey.
Then after they get it, people start teasing it and making it frustrated and what they call 'mean.'
So then they put it in a cage and neglect it and the monkey eventually loses it's mind being locked up.
It is one of the saddest things in the world.

check with local pet stores. most restrictions are on selling and not really owning. i had a neighbor with a chimpanzee in tampa. when it grew up it wasn't so fun anymore cause they get big -- like human teenager sized big. they had to make their garage into its new home and it would scream and you could hear it for a mile. try a spider monkey. there were really cute little ones that were a little bigger than your fist and had old mens faces they sold in a pet store back home when i was a kid. anyway check with the pet store. i have seen monkeys available at flea markets too.

This is a repeated question !!!!!! A good one but repeated..We are in America. If you have the money,to buy permits, time to spend and ed. of primates ya can do it.. Monkeys are cool and we all are fascinated by them as they are by us but what people don't think of is what goes on to get that poor monkey to you. Watch "Gorillas in the mist"....... If you do get one lots of luck and hug it for me .... : )
